A nutrient is a chemical substance found in food that keeps our bodies humming along. As such, nutrients are really invaluable.
Nutritional science groups them into 6 classes, based on function:
1. Carbohydrates
2. Fats
3. Proteins
4. Minerals
5. Vitamins
6. Water
That’s it, no more, no less! Just get each of these in the proper proportion and you’re good to go! The problem is “garbage in, garbage out:” the times I dive into physiology I’m struck by the myriad processes happening cell-to-cell and within the cell. This sobers me to consider most of what I consume should be the highest quality possible to not gum up the works.
Also, according to Chinese dietetics, the proportion of nutrient is different depending upon constitution. Broad brush example: a 19 year-old male college student has different nutritional needs than a 45 year-old mother of three who works full time.
In our practice we advocate that a quality diet, regular exercise, following healthy lifestyle habits, and finding a little time to regroup each and every day are equally important to promote longevity. We work with you to figure out each piece and do a dietary assessment with recommendations if that’s what you need.
